When does the program begin?
We are accepting students for the Fall 2016 semester.
How many credit hours does the program require?
The program requires 36 credit hours. For the thesis option, 30 hours of coursework and 6 hours of thesis credits are required. For the non-thesis option, 36 hours of coursework are required.
Is the program offered on the Edinburg or Brownsville campus?
The program offers flexible class schedules on both Edinburg and Brownsville campuses and online. In-class lectures typically take place later in the day after 5 pm to accommodate students who are presently employed.
Are there funding opportunities for enrolled students?
Yes. Funding opportunities in the form of graduate research and teaching assistantships are available for enrolled students.
What types of careers are available to graduates with an M.A. in Disaster Studies?
The M.A. in Disaster Studies is unique in that it is a very flexible degree. Graduates holding degrees in Disaster Studies and Emergency Management are often employed as emergency management specialists, homeland security officers, hospital emergency preparedness administrators, public health planners, communication officers, and emergency response technicians. The program also prepares students for Ph.D. programs in emergency management, public health, and related fields in anticipation for careers in teaching and research.
